“Modern Tuscany” is a phrase that’s not in any danger of becoming a cliché any time soon — this is a region that’s too often content to coast on its (admittedly appealing) historical charms, and any time we can highlight a bit of contemporary Tuscan design, we’re only too happy to take the opportunity. Argentario Golf Resort & Spa is thus doubly rare; not only is this sort of modernist architecture and visually arresting contemporary design a rarity on the Maremma coast, it’s also by no means standard in the world of high-end golf and spa resorts.

These days modern architecture invariably includes an ecological component, and Argentario (including its links) is as environmentally friendly as it is stylistically bold. And here, in the countryside, where square footage is no concern, it’s only natural that the accommodations should be generously sized; aside from a few full-sized suites and a few standard rooms, the bulk of them are junior suites, complete with private terraces and full-sized bathrooms with soaking tubs.

You’re not far from the beach, you’re facing onto the golf course, and of course the rest of coastal Tuscany’s plentiful attractions are quite close at hand. At the moment it’s still a bit of an exception, but if hoteliers like Augusto Orsini have their way, modern design on the Maremma will soon be a more familiar sight.
